Basha Kill, Ny
The Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area is located on the Orange County-Sullivan County border. It consists of over 3,000 acres of wetlands and uplands. Until about 60 years ago the area was drained annually and used for agriculture, before the importance of freshwater wetlands to clean groundwater was recognized.
Mary and I were putting our new Sit-On-Top (SOT) kayaks on our car outside the store when we bought them. A nice couple stopped to talk to us about Kayaking and asked if we had ever been to the "Basha Kill". We hadn't. We looked it up on a map and decided to give it a look. As far as we can tell, from talking with people, is that in early spring the Basha Kill looks like a large lake. As spring and summer progress the grasses grow taller leaving channels.
We saw an osprey and a bald eagle nest. It is was a great day trying out our new SOT kayaks, fishing (we didn't catch a thing) and touring new territory.
