Chodikee Lake and Black Creek near Highland, NY
Chodikee Lake is located on the west side of the Hudson River. About 5 miles east of New Paltz and 3.5 miles north of Highland. Situated between the New York Thruway (I-87) and route 9W north of route 299.
The Poughkeepsie Journal has an article with some information about the lake (http://cityguide.pojonews.com/fe/Recreation/stories/re_chodikee_lake.asp).
The more interesting parts of the paddle were the north and south sections of the Black Creek. Put in at the DEC maintained fishing boat access, paddle out of a small channel and you are in the lake. Head to either the north or south end of the lake and you find the Black Creek.
A large Great blue heron nesting colony appears high in the dead trees to the east as you enter the north section of the creek. Further north are many signs of beaver activity in the form of damns and several beaver lodges.
Paddling in the lake the Highland Residential Center stands out with all of it's fencing and razor wire on the east side of the lake.
There were many turtles seen sliding in the water as we paddled near.
