2009 South Carolina Vacation

April 24 to May 2, 2009 I took vacation in the Charleston area of South Carolina.  I rented a house in a gated community called Seabrook Island.  The house is on a pond that has fish, turtles and at least one American Alligator. I contacted the kayaking group 'Low Country Paddlers' for paddling locations and possible company while kayaking.  I was contacted by the nicest of gentlemen, Michael.  We exchanged several e-mails before I left NY. Apr 26 - May 2, 2009 Photos of the rental house and some views of the area wildlife.  This Alligator was seen on several occasions either swimming past the house or sunning within feet of the back deck.  I actually could have reached out and dropped something on the Alligators nose.  Also seen were birds, turtles and fish.

April 26, 2009                                  Goose Creek Reservoir, North Charleston, SC Michael (from Low Country Paddlers) thought this would be a good                                                                       start to kayaking in SC.                                                           Saw many Alligators and birds.                                                                              Paddled 10.3 miles

April 27, 2009 Goose Creek Reservoir, North Charleston, SC 2 small islands used by egrets & herons for nesting sites Paddled alone to get pictures of egret/heron rookeries Saw some Alligators and many birds Paddled about 5 miles

April 28, 2009     Shem Creek, Charleston Harbor, The Cove, Mount Pleasant, SC                                                Michael, Billy (Michael's brother) and I Saw Crab Bank (a seabird rookery), Forts Sumter & Moultrie, Coast    Guard helicopters trying to get plane crash out of a marsh & many                                                                                                    birds.                                                                        Paddled about 8 miles.

April 29, 2009 Drove and walked around the Seabrook Island area Walked to the beach and followed nature trails It was a very beautiful peaceful day.

April 30, 2009             Another great day on the water with my new friend, Michael.      Launch in the Wando River and paddled into the Hobcaw Creek.                                                                  Saw many birds and boats

May 1, 2009 Drove and walked around Seabrook Island again. Another beautiful day in South Carolina. Saw birds and Atlantic Ghost Crabs.
