“Leave only footprints, take only memories” (...and maybe some pictures)
June 11, 2014
7:00 am Alarm went off and we showered and dressed and then headed out. Stopped at McDs in Hot Springs for breakfast.  Actually sat in and ate at a table instead of on the go like we normally do.  Wrote out post cards to mail. 9:40 am Arrived at Garvan Woodland Gardens.  It is the property of the University of Arkansas.  It (and the area we were staying) is located in the Ouachita Mountains (pronounced: wash-e-taw). 10:00 am Walked past the entrance to visit the Anthony Chapel.  With glass making up the walls and roof of the structure and very sturdy looking wood framing the chapel is very impressive.  Before we even entered the chapel a peacock was lounging around the entrance posing for our cameras.  Barbara noticed that one of its tail feathers was falling out and as it turned a corner to walk away she put her finger on the feather and it stayed in place as the peacock walked away.  A neat souvenir.  Then we went inside for some photos. Beautiful gardens.  We took many photos.  Very interesting place.  Would have liked to have seen more of it but the place is pretty large and we ran out of time and energy. 4:30 pm Hit the shop on the way out and I bought Barbara a very pretty cornflower-blue, wide brimmed hat.  She looks beautiful in the hat. 5:00 pm We took Hot Springs Mountain Drive up to the top of the mountain to the tower.  We didn’t go up in the tower but there was a nice view from the parking area at the bottom.  The drive is a one way road that begins and ends in the town and takes you up the side of the steep mountain. 5:30 pm Detour before dinner to take a look at Hot Springs Village.  We thought it was a large gated retirement community but it is not age restricted.  We stopped at a strip mall just outside the gate.  Barbara jumped out of the truck to look for information about the Village.  The door to the Chamber of Commerce office opened, a woman talked with Barbara for a couple of minutes and then Barbara entered the office.  I waited in the truck for about ½ hour expecting Barbara to come out quickly, but I finally went into the office.  Barbara had a pass so we could drive around the Village and a handful of maps and brochures about the Village and area.  It is USA’s largest gated community.  It has 11 lakes, 9 golf courses and about 600 miles of private roads. 7:00 pm Tried to stop at Stubby’s Bar-B-Que for dinner but as we were sitting in the parking lot I watched in my rear-view mirror someone flip the sign from ‘open’ to ‘closed’.  How sad! We ended up at Hibachi Sushi Buffet in Hot Springs.  The place looks fairly new in strip mall on Central Ave.  The place is large and the food was pretty good.
