Galapagos Islands 2015 Vacation (INCA Tours)

Post Card Delivered

June 13, 2015

Our day in (almost) painful detail

While on our vacation in The Galapagos Islands we stopped at Post Office Bay on Floreana Island. The history is that sometime in the 19th century whalers set up a wooden barrel on the site that became known as Post Office Bay.  Whalers, arriving and just starting out on the task of hunting whales, would put letters in the barrel.  Other whalers, with ship’s hold full of whale parts and heading for home, would make one last stop at the barrel at Post Office Bay and sift through the letters.  The whalers would take any mail close to their home port and hand deliver the letters for the whalers that still had months to go before they would be arriving home. The tradition is maintained and most tours seem to stop and sort through the letters and postcards in the barrel.  We left a few post cards in the barrel but only found one close enough to hand deliver.  The postcard was addressed for a house in New Haven, CT. A few weeks after our trip was over we looked up the address and hit the road.  The ride took a little over 2 hours from my house.  The house was near Yale University and the addressees both were connected with the university. The day was a beautiful sunny day with few clouds.  When we arrived we parked and knocked on the front door.  No one was home.  Bummer.  Barbara and I talked about what we should do and decided to write a quick note and put the postcard and our note on the front door.  Just as we were preparing to leave a car pulled up and a woman got out to see what we were up to.  As we were explaining to her why we were parked in her driveway her husband pulled up. We stood outside their house and talked about Post Office Bay and the tours we had been on in the Galapagos Islands.  Very nice couple.  We took and few photos and then headed for home. All in all, a very nice afternoon.
