Day 1

October 23, 2016

4:00am Another adventure starts.  I woke up before the alarm (adventure jitters?), showered and dressed.  The alarm went off at 4am, I woke up Barbara and she is getting ready. 5:10am I just looked out the window and saw that the car and driver is in the driveway already.  We are both ready and eager.  When I told Barbara the adventure is starting, her reply was “Whoo hoo”. 6:30am At the airport pulling up to the curb to unload. 6:50am We have checked in, they have our luggage and we are online for the security checks. 8:15am At the gate and ready to board. 9:50am We are on the plane, in our seats, waiting for departure. 10:10am We just took off. 10:40am We are somewhere over central NY State.  According to the flight map, we are approaching Binghamton.  Pilot announced that we should be landing around 11:30am. 11:25am We have just landed in Toronto, Canada. 1:35pm We made it through customs.  Figured out that even though we were told we would have to pick up our suitcases and carry them through customs and security that is not the case anymore.  We had a long enough layover that we had time for a nice panini from one of the airport restaurants.  We met Kathy, a very nice woman from NJ, who is heading for the same polar bear tour we are doing.  Done with security and on another plane, ready to fly to Winnipeg. 1:55pm We have pushed back from the terminal and are heading for the runway. 1:15pm (On Central Time now)  We are in the air and heading towards Winnipeg. 3:25pm On the ground.  Touch down in Winnipeg. 4:30pm We are in the Fort Garry Hotel in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  We are in room 924 on the 9th floor.  We thought, being on the 9th floor, we would have a nice view of the city.  But no.  The hotel is in the shape of a capital “E”, and our window looks out towards one of the other arms of the hotel, not the city. 5:00pm We just got back into our room.  Natural Habitat Adventures (NatHab) loans out heavy coats and boots for the stay on the tundra in Churchill.  We just went and picked out our boots and coats.  We were so happy with the boots (warm and comfortable) that when we got back home we each ordered a pair online. 5:40pm Wandering around near the hotel trying to figure out what to do about dinner and maybe some souvenir shopping. 5:55pm Barbara and I are wandering around an area of Winnipeg called ‘The Forks’, based on the fork shaped joining of two rivers (the Red River & the Assiniboine River).  It used to be an area of warehouses, but all the warehouses have been converted into shopping areas.  Souvenir shops, gifts, restaurants…  We are walking around hoping to find a place for dinner. 6:15pm We decided to dine at ‘The Old Spaghetti Factory’ in one of the converted warehouses.  The place is packed.  Looks like mostly locals which is usually a good sign. 7:05pm For dinner Barbara had “Seafood Fettuccine Alfredo A creamy creation with prawns, scallops and mushrooms sautéed with our spinach and egg fettuccine noodles and Alfredo sauce” and John had “Penne with Chicken Sautéed chicken pieces, mushrooms, and penne noodles tossed in a rich white wine basil cream sauce with minced peppers and tomatoes”.  Now, for dessert, we are both having Spumoni ice cream (chocolate, vanilla & pistachio). 7:25pm Heading back to our room after a nice dinner. 7:45pm Back in our room after a very nice dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory.  There was a big hockey game in the area and we rode up the elevator with people that went to the game.  The game was the Manitoba Jets against the Edmonton Oilers. The local team, from Manitoba lost.  The hockey fans seemed a tad tipsy, but they were funny and seemed in a good mood.
